Time to Explore

Once ashore, guests are free to explore the islands independently. You will discover the remains of stone cottages dating back to the 1800s, including the king’s house, shebeen, school buildings, church, and a former two-storey shop.

Walking maps are available, allowing you to explore at your own pace while learning about the island’s history and the lives of those who once called Inishkea home.

Historic Highlights

The Inishkea Islands are rich in historic landmarks, including The Alt Mór navigation tower, The Bailey Mór, an ancient Christian monastery, St. Colmcille’s Church, and the remains of a former Norwegian whaling station. These sites offer a fascinating insight into the island’s spiritual, maritime, and cultural past.

What a brilliant trip to Blacksod and the lighthouse today. It was a great visit out and to get to see the lighthouse and it’s history and more history about the area. The lighthouse is fascinating with how it works and the role of the weather station in WW2. The lobster was an unexpected bonus!! The boat trip was fantastic thanks to all for making such a wonderful family trip out and especially to Jed for skippering the boat and being great at making the day extra special for the kids!

Had the most amazing boat trip today with Jed to Blacksod. Fantastic trip across the bay to to meet the wonderful character Jerry Sweeney who was a fountain of knowledge regarding this history of Blacksod. The kids had a ball, driving the boat was the highlight of their holiday. Will definitely book again when we are back in Achill.

Thanks for a lovely fishing trip this evening. Perfect weather conditions and we caught lots of Mackerel and a few Pollock. Jed was a great Captain who went out of his way to make sure we all caught some fish! I woud highly recommend doing a trip with Wild West Boat Tours!
